Heirloom Jewelry Redesign in Chicago: A Grandmother's Earring

Jewelry That Holds Memories

How one inherited earring became a meaningful piece of jewelry that could be worn every day. Some pieces of jewelry are worth far more than the gold, diamonds, or gemstones they’re made of. Their true value comes from the memories they carry and the people who once wore them. At Wedding Bands & Co., we often meet clients who bring us jewelry that has been passed down through generations. Sometimes these pieces are no longer practical to wear, but their sentimental value is irreplaceable. One of our clients came to us with a particularly meaningful challenge: she had inherited just one of her grandmother’s earrings.

Two Sisters, One Heirloom

The earrings originally belonged to our client’s grandmother. When they were passed down to the next generation, the two sisters each received one earring. It was a beautiful way to share something meaningful between them. Each sister had a piece of their grandmother’s jewelry and a tangible reminder of someone they loved. But there was one problem. Our client loved her earring and everything it represented, yet she rarely had an opportunity to wear it. As a single earring, it spent most of its time tucked away in her jewelry box. She didn’t want to sell it, replace it, or lose the connection to its original design. She simply wanted to find a way to enjoy it again.

“I wanted to keep my grandmother's memory close, and now I have a ring I can wear every day.” Yulia Kern

Redesigning the Earring

When our client brought the earring to Koorosh, our founder and chief jewelry designer, the goal wasn’t simply to create another beautiful ring. It was to preserve something meaningful. Koorosh approached the project with one important principle: the new design should respect the original jewelry and the memories attached to it. Rather than treating the inherited earring as scrap material, he developed a custom ring design that kept the original piece at the heart of the transformation. The result was a ring our client could wear and enjoy, while still recognizing the jewelry that once belonged to her grandmother. What had been sitting in a jewelry box could now become part of her everyday life.

Why Redesign Heirloom Jewelry?

Many families have inherited jewelry that they rarely wear. Perhaps it’s a grandmother’s engagement ring that doesn’t fit your style, an outdated necklace, a broken bracelet, or a single earring that has lost its matching piece. These items often remain untouched for years because their owners don’t want to change something with so much sentimental value. But redesigning heirloom jewelry doesn’t have to mean erasing its history. At Wedding Bands & Co., we believe a thoughtful redesign can honor the past while creating something that fits your life today. Depending on the piece, we may be able to preserve original gemstones, incorporate existing design elements, or use the original precious metal in a new creation. Every project begins with understanding what the jewelry means to its owner.

The Custom Jewelry Design Process

Custom jewelry redesign requires more than technical skill. It requires listening. Before we begin designing, we want to understand the story behind the piece, which elements matter most, and how our client hopes to wear the finished jewelry. From there, Koorosh works with the client to explore design possibilities. Our custom design process can include sketches, CAD modeling, and three-dimensional renderings, allowing clients to visualize their new piece before production begins. We also carefully evaluate the condition of existing gemstones and settings to determine which elements can be safely incorporated into the new design. The goal is always the same: to create jewelry that is beautiful, wearable, and personally meaningful.

A Family Story Continues

What makes this particular project special isn’t only the finished ring. It’s what the ring represents. Two sisters still share a connection to their grandmother through the original pair of earrings. One sister now has a custom ring she can wear, carrying that memory with her wherever she goes. The jewelry has changed, but its meaning remains. And perhaps that’s the most beautiful part of heirloom jewelry redesign. We don’t always need to replace something old with something new. Sometimes we simply need to find a new way for its story to continue.
