The pros and cons of the bezel engagement ring setting

What is a bezel engagement ring?

Bezel engagement rings are one of the most popular rings, in jewelry shops. Our clients encounter many questions around the setting and benefits of bezel rings. Therefore, I decided to introduce bezels and provide you with some of the most important features of them.

There are many engagement ring styles. It is important to know about different styles of engagement rings.

What Is a Bezel Engagement Ring?

Bezel engagement ring setting is popular for its simple and extra safety it provides for its gemstone. In the bezel engagement setting, the stone is safely surrounded by plain or decorative rims of a precious metal. The surrounding rim is bent inward, to hold the gemstone in its place.

If you are planning to give a forever-lasting gift to your beloved or you are planning for a memorable proposal to the person you love, keep in mind that bezels are a perfect choice. Most American women love the simple and brilliant look of bezels.

How do you set a bezel?

To set a bezel, we use different tools to meet your needs. Firstly, we need to know which gemstone you like to bezel set. This is a very important factor. If the gemstone has some flaws, which need to be covered, we need to carefully consider that.

That is why gemstone that our clients choose makes a difference in the process and sometimes in the type of bezel. In case, our customers are willing to bezel a gemstone with a relatively flat surface to sit on, we will design it in a very unique way to meet their needs.

After considering the shape of the stone, we will use a bezel wire around the object. The bezel wire should not be fixed so tightly.it should be circled a bit looser in case some adjustments need to be done, during the work. When bezel wire is fixed, we’ll get to trim the height of it.

Depending on the stone you are using, in this step, we will decide whether to make a partial or full bezel setting. Normally, partial bezels are recommended for adding to the beauty of the gemstone.

Then by bringing the two ends of the bezel wire together, we’ll check that the final work will match. By using a solder, we’ll join the ends and will form it. Once we are finished the overall shape, we’ll pop out the stone.

Depending on the client’s order the process of setting bezels can vary from model to model. However, with our expertise and experience in this field, we’ll be able to come up with some unique designs which are elegant and suit contemporary needs and tastes.

Customization is a very important part of the design, and we can help you to customize your ring in a very special way. Before making any decision you need to know more about the  customization process.

Different types of bezel settings

There are two bezel settings. Even though bezels mostly are used for round diamonds, other shapes of diamonds can also be set in bezel. The most well-known bezel settings are as follows:

Full Bezel Setting:

As you may have guessed, in full bezels the metal surrounds the entire gemstone and covers it from every angle. In this setting, there is maximum protection for the gemstone from every edge which makes it less likely to break or fall out. On the other hand, as a result of full protection, the gemstone seems to be smaller and sparkles less from the sides and more from the upward.

Partial Bezel Setting:

Unlike the full bezel setting, in partial bezel, the gemstone is only encircled in some parts. Therefore, the stone can be seen more vividly which can make the stone seem much larger. In addition to that, since all sides of the stone are not covered, the stone is more probable to shine from all sides. This makes the stone more brilliant.

On the other hand, in partial setting, the stone is not much protected and the chances for breakage or chip are higher. This type of bezel setting is also called: “Half Bezel.”

Bezel settings have some benefits and drawbacks in comparison to other traditional settings:

Pros:

1- protection against possible damages

One of the main advantages of bezel setting, in comparison to other traditional types, is that the gemstone is protected against scratches of daily objects and provides safety by holding the gemstone in its place. As discussed earlier, the protection level in full bezel is higher than in partial.

2- Tends to hide flaws

Since in the bezel setting, the rims of the metal are bent inward to embrace the gemstone, it can hide any probable flaws of the stone. There may be some imperfections and inclusion in the edge of the stone. In the bezel setting, we can manage to hide the imperfections of your gemstones.

3- Bezel is more modern than other settings

The bezel is one of the modern settings. Being modern and having a simple and plain structure adds to the beauty of this setting. Therefore, more women will fall in love with them!

4- Easier to maintain and clean

Bezel maintenance is easier for its simple design. Taking care of bezel will take less time which makes it more appropriate for busy women. Other settings usually need more care during daily activity. With bezels, active women can also enjoy having good-looking hands, with no worry.

Women who are active and run busy careers, such as athletes, medical professionals prefer bezels because they are less likely to damage their working environment.

Cons:

1-Minimizes gemstone’s size and level of sparkle

The fact that the metal is bent inward decreases the brilliance and size of the gemstone. That is why in the bezel setting a large amount of the gemstone’s surface is covered by metal. However, our expert designing team can bezel in a way that the stone looks big and shiny by adjusting the width of the band and thickness of the surrounding metal. So, before planning for a bezel setting, make sure to consult with our designer.

2-Bezel settings are expensive

Bezels are more expensive than other settings, as it needs more expertise, time, effort and the amount of metal needed. For bezel setting more customization is required because each bezel setting should be custom made depending on the general characteristics of the gemstone.

Is a bezel setting more expensive?

Bezel settings are usually more expensive than in other settings. As bezel settings need more time, expertise and more amount of metal. In addition to that, some jewelry designers do not accept to make bezel settings for your special stone. The reason is that the bezel setting needs customization for each kind of stone.

Therefore, bezel engagement settings are more expensive than settings like prong. However; in return for this higher cost, you’ll receive a good-looking, secure engagement ring that attracts more attention.

For some people choosing between bezel and prong settings is hard. To choose between them, you need to be familiar with the  features of prongs.

Are bezels vulnerable?

Busy women can be sure that bezel is one of the most secure settings in jewelry shops. Since bezels wrap the stone in a band of metal, it provides more protection against daily, unwanted hits. Let’s compare bezel with prongs. Prongs are riskier than the bezel.

If your prong-set hits the edge of a glass desk, your diamond is likely to lose or chip. Therefore, if your fiancé runs a busy life, the bezel is the best choice for you to surprise her in Valentine’s Day or for women’s day.

Girls need to have a perfect engagement ring. To learn more about the reasons for it, we highly recommend you to continue reading the importance of rings.

Does bezel make diamond look bigger?

If you want your diamond to look bigger you need to choose partial bezels. However; you need to consider that in partial bezel, the level of security of diamond decreases. in full bezel, the stone is surrounded by metals. Therefore, only partial bezels can make the diamond look bigger.

Does the bezel set diamond sparkle?

In partial bezel setting, the diamonds sparkle more. In partial bezel setting, the diamonds sparkle a lot more as it is not entirely protected by metals. In partial setting, the diamond sparkle from sides and the upward part, while in full bezel setting, it only sparkles from the upward. If you intend the diamond to sparkle more in a bezel setting, you need to compromise the security of the diamond and choose to have a partial set.

What gemstone is the best choice for a bezel ring?

Softer gemstones are the most suitable choices for a bezel setting. we recommend you to consider bezel settings for gemstones with hardness lower than 6-7 on the Mohs scale.

For example, opal or turquoise stones can be good options for bezel settings. Gemstones with different shapes can also be chosen for bezel setting. before taking any action, you need to consult with a professional designer to make sure that your desired gemstone looks perfect on bezel settings.

Colored stones are also a good choice for bezels. Colored stones look very nice on bezel settings and make the ring so lovely. Colored stones sparkle a lot in partial bezel settings.

However; colored stones are not good for everyone. Before choosing a colored stone, please make sure that your intended loving girl is a fan of colored stones.

As a jewelry designer, we can bezel gemstones with different shapes and hardness. Once again, keep in mind to consult with a professional designer, before taking any action.

Are bezels perfect for everyone?

Bezel settings are perfect for everyone. Most American girls love bezels for their security and simplicity. If you are considering to provide a suitable gift for active women, bezels can be a good choice for you.

Bezels are less likely to get loose and fall off, which makes it a perfect choice for women who have busy occupations and mostly work with hands. Therefore, if your beloved girl is a nurse, athlete, hairdresser, doctor, surgeon or even a housewife, we can assure you that bezels are suitable for them.

The above-mentioned features make the bezels a good choice for women with different occupations from housewives to modern employed women.

How to maintain bezel settings?

Bezel settings are easy to clean and maintain. Dirt can be stocked between the metal and your gemstone.

In this case, do not panic! The only thing you need to do is to use warm, soapy water and a toothbrush to remove the dirt. If you tried to do so and the dirt persisted, please go to a professional person to clean the bezel for you.

In addition to occasional dirt, the ring can also be affected by lotions, soapy waters, and oils that women use daily. These oils may also affect the brilliance of the rings. For this, you need to be careful when applying lotions on your hands.

If the dirt stocks on the bezel for a while, the ring needs to be cleaned immediately. To do so, you may need some simple, household cleaning products, such as mild soap, rubbing alcohol, soft cloth, warm water and maybe some bowls to soak the ring in.

First of all, you need to make sure that the stone is fixed in its place. Then make sure what kind of dirt you are going to remove.

For example, for oils and lotions, you simply need to rub alcohol over the setting and then dry it with a soft cloth. We recommend you to do all the processes in a bowl. Since the pieces are too small and there is a possibility of losing some pieces, during this process.

For removing the dirt that is stocked between the metal and the stone, make sure you are not using a sharp, pointed object. Sharp objects can result in making scratches on the metal or o the stone.

Cleaning and maintenance are very important. By having your bezel cleaned periodically, you can enjoy having a shiny and beautiful ring for years.
